ARTWORK OPPORTUNITY:The
5th Avenue Theatre is seeking to commission three (3) King County-based artists to create original contemporary artwork inspired by the spirit and vision of Georges Seurat's masterwork, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, 1884. This new, original art (created in any two or three-dimensional media) is intended to be the artists' personal reaction/response to Seurat's innovative painting. We are especially interested in commissioning work that will be a contemporary refection of the Pointillist/Divisionist interest in light, color, and vision. A commission of $2500 will be paid to each selected artist. In addition, the artworks will be auctioned at The 5th Avenue Theatre's annual GALA event, and one-half of the proceeds of the sale of these artworks will go directly to artists. (Proceeds will be pooled and split equally among the artists). The commissioned artworks will be utilized by The 5th Avenue Theatre in association with its upcoming production of Stephen Sondheim's acclaimed Pulitzer Prize winning musical Sunday In The Park With George, inspired by the life and work of Georges Seurat. The commissioned artworks will be displayed at various museums and/or gallery events during April-May 2009. Publication rights of the selected artwork must be granted through 2009. Images of the selected artworks will be used (in conjunction with The 5th Avenue Theatre's logo, as well as the show's title treatment) on the following collateral material: Posters, programs, flyers, and other print and electronic promotional materials created and employed for the production of Sunday in the Park with George.

Artist Selection Process: Project statement and Portfolio review for King County-based artists
Deadline: 5:00 P.M. on Monday, December 8, 2008 (this is NOT a postmark date)
ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS:Eligibility: This project is open to artists residing in King County, Washington.
Selection Process: A three to six person selection panel will be assembled from personnel at The 5th Avenue Theatre.
Selection Criteria: The artists will be selected on the following criteria: Artistic quality of the applicant's work
APPLICATION MATERIALS:Artists applying for this project MUST submit the following materials:
Statement of Interest [up to one page] explanation of applicant's interest in the project and how they feel they could create a new artwork inspired by/in reaction to Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. Please include the applicant's name, telephone number, and email address, if available.
Work Sample (Portfolio?) Submission: At least three digital image(s) of individual works of art on a CD-R with the applicant's name, contact information and number of images OR an email with attached images totaling no more than 10 MB submitted to jchapman@5thavenue.org
File Labeling: Files must be titled with the artist's last name and a number that corresponds to the annotated image list. [Example: Smith_01.jpg]
Annotated Image List: A page of information with artist's name, contact information (mailing address, telephone number, email address if available), title of artwork, medium, date the artwork was created, size of the image (unframed) and the image number, matching name of electronic file.
A Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope with sufficient postage for return of CDs if desired.
