1T art in the park
Artist and vendor spaces in Occidental Park are available on a first come/first serve basis. Guidelines for artists and vendors are available here. ↓
GENERAL INFORMATION
Art in the Park began as a gathering of students, craftspeople, and aspiring artists who converged on Occidental Square the First Thursday of every month to hawk their wares. From its inception, Art in the Park was an organic group: children sold crayon drawings off of blankets spread out on the brick surface; tattooed artists filled baskets with fragile, pastel-colored glass balls; and hippie painters balanced massive canvases on spindly easels. Today Art in the Park has grown to become one of Seattle’s premier venues for jewelry makers, glass blowers, and print makers to display and sell their work.
Participation in Art in the Park is simple:
Artists may only sell or display their own unique items:
• All merchandise must be original arts or crafts. Imports are not allowed!
• All merchandise must be sold or displayed by the artist who created it.
• Prints and reproductions may only be sold by the original artist.
Qualifying artists may participate on a first-come, first-served, space-available basis. Booths may be plotted and assigned in extraordinary circumstances.
The City of Seattle requires that vendors who intend to sell items at Art in the Park hold a current Seattle business license. A UBI number issued by the State of Washington is not an adequate substitute.
Art in the Park fees are as follows:
Booth Fee -
• $10 for space smaller than 10’ x 10’
• $20 for a 10' x 10' space (or any size canopy)
Park-Use Fee -
In addition to the booth fee, a park use fee (calculated at 10% of a vendor’s sales that day) will be collected by staff at the conclusion of Art in the Park. This fee, mandated by the City, is used to pay for ongoing park maintenance, post-event clean-up, and utilities.
Artists who show, but do not sell, their work will be allowed one space of no more than 10’ x 10’. Neither the booth fee nor the park-use fee will be collected. These vendors must declare their intention to not sell their works when registering with event staff.
Up to four artists may share a single booth space. Because works must be sold by the artist who created them, each artist in a shared booth must have his/her own city business license and must register for Art in the Park individually.
On the First Thursday of a given month, artists who want to participate in Art in the Park should:
Plan to arrive in Occidental Square no earlier than 10 a.m. on the day of the event. Check-out for artists will occur no later than 9:00 p.m.
Upon arrival, vendors should register with event staff in the Information Kiosk in Occidental Square. If no event staff are present at the time, the vendor should continue setting up his/her booth space; event staff will register the vendor upon returning to the park.
Artists must sign-in with the event staff. Upon signing-in, the vendor will be assigned a vendor number (which is provided on a 4” x 5” card and which must be displayed at all times). This is also the chance for the vendor to ask any questions he or she may have about the process.
If an artist plans to conduct business (selling work or giving information to sell work at a later time), they will need to present a City of Seattle business license; business license numbers will be kept on-file, so returning vendors may not be asked to present their license every month.
Vendors pays the appropriate booth fee. This can be paid with cash, VISA, MasterCard, or with a check made out to "PSCA." Upon request, a receipt will be issued to the vendor. The artist will also receive the envelope in which he or she will submit their park use fee at the end of the event.
Artists should keep their business license, vendor registration number, and check-out envelope visible during the event.
An artist who intends only to show his/her work, but not conduct business, must sign-in at the Information Booth upon arrival, but will not be charged the booth or park-use fees and need not hold a current city business license.
Booth spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Event staff may help an artist identify an available space. On less crowded nights, artists generally have a number of options for booth location; on such occasions, booth sizes will not be formally plotted or measured unless it is necessary to accommodate more artists or settle disputes. On more crowded nights, event staff reserve the right to measure and plot booth locations, though artists will still be given their choice of available space on a first-come, first-serve basis. Staff retain final control over booth assignments, booth locations, and the total number of vendors who can participate and can limit participation accordingly.
At the end of an event, the park-use envelopes must be returned to event staff with the fee enclosed before departing Occidental Park. The envelope should be filled out completely with the artist's name, date, total sales, and the fee (10% of sales) clearly noted. This fee may be paid with cash, Visa, MasterCard, or check (made out to "PSCA").
Enforcing Guidelines Fairly
The guidelines for Art in the Park were developed and revised with the input of artists, vendors, the City of Seattle, and the Pioneer Square community. Vendors who fail to follow the guidelines as outlined may be asked to leave the event, and event staff reserve the right to bar vendors from participation in future events.
